Research and Teaching Interest:
I am a film and media scholar. My research specialization lies in the areas of Indian Hindi cinema and Muslim identity, postcolonial theory, popular culture, secularism, nationalism and qualitative research. I obtained my doctoral degree titled, ‘Imagining “Muslim” identity: An interpretive study of Hindi cinema’ from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, India in 2016. My Ph.D. work and subsequent recent publications have been guided by the question of communalism and nationalism and studied the position of Muslims in the complex representational scheme in contemporary popular Hindi cinema. My papers appeared in international journals such as Journal of Arab & Muslim Media Research, Journal of Religion and Film, South Asian popular culture. To further reconfigure scholarly discourse about the representations of Muslims in cinematic space in several different venues outside the immediate institutional context of dissertation in recent years,
I presented papers at different national and international conferences.
As a part of converting my doctoral dissertation, “Imagining Muslim Identity: An Interpretive Study of Hindi Cinema” into a book manuscript, I intend to start another round of fieldwork with the audience because of the changed socio-political scenario in contemporary India. I intend to delve deep into the psyche of the Indian film audience to study the portrayal of Muslims in Hindi films and how some of the sensationalistic films indirectly alter the socio-political landscape of India.
My article “‘Love-Jihad’ and Bollywood: Constructing Muslims as ‘Other’” (2018) has received good scholarly attention and appreciation. I am planning to convert the paper into a larger book-length project. Thus, I have already started conceptualizing another project, “Re-articulating the position of Women and Muslims through the Cinematic Representation of Bollywood.” In this second project, I would argue that one of the most controversial components of Hindu nationalism has been the hate campaign against what is termed as ‘love-jihad’ which is deployed as a weapon to mobilize, polarize and communalize citizens and how gender specially women always have been playing an important role of the proud embodiment of the nation.
Apart from Hindi Cinema, I am keen on working on south Asian vernacular films, especially Bengali films. I have recently submitted a book chapter related to Representation of Muslims in three major
Bengali Films: Zulfiqar, RajKahini and Kabir’. These films provide a site for studying the unique transactions among the discourses of sexuality, partition, nationalism, terrorism and Muslim identity.
I teach courses such as Film Studies, Elements of Film, Popular Culture and Cinema, Mass Media Research, Communication for Development.
I am happy to supervise MA or PhD students with a strong interest in film, particularly those whose theses examine issues of religion and politics, gender and cinema, film genre, and film spectatorship.
